From A-V The Constellations Are All Here

There are 88 official constellations. Astronomers use them to divide the sky, like a map. This makes it easier to locate celestial objects.

For example you may read that Jupiter is appearing in Capricorn. Now you can find Capricorn and try to locate Jupiter.

They also lend their name to certain deep-sky objects found within their borders. An example would be the Andromeda Galaxy...so named because it is located in the constellation(area of the sky) Andromeda.

For us backyard stargazers though, constellations are the mythological pictures from the(mostly) ancient Greek and Roman stories.

The Greeks, Romans, Chinese, Babylonians and most if not all ancient cultures, viewed the nighttime sky and created pictures from the stars to visualize their own mythologies.

These pictures are of course imaginary as the stars which create them are usually extremely far away from each other. In time as eons pass these star pictures will change and become unrecognizable as what they represent now.

Check out the explanations of right ascension(RA) and declination(DEC) on the star constellations page to understand those terms.

More pages will follow as time allows.
